FRANKSTON tow truck operators have been kept busy since police introduced anti-hoon driving laws on July 1, 2006.
Since that time, 235 Frankston vehicles have been towed away and impounded, making Frankston the fourth-highest hoon area in the state, behind Bendigo (319), Broadmeadows (248) and Werribee (239). Statewide, police have impounded more than 8126 vehicles, about six cars a day.
Vehicles can be impounded if a driver is caught exceeding the speed limit by 45kmh.
The legislation also applies to offences such as organising or engaging in street racing, evading police, loss of traction (burnouts, doughnuts, fishtails) and dangerous driving.
First-time offenders lose their vehicles for 48 hours, second offenders up to three months and for anyone convicted of a third offence police may apply for forfeiture of the vehicle. Drivers in the 20-30 age group were the worst offenders.
