Pines to appeal league ban decision

30 Jun, 2009 02:43 PM
FRANKSTON Pines Football Club will tomorrow appeal a decision by the Football Federation Victoria to suspend it from the soccer competition for the season following a brawl between supporters at Monterey Reserve after a game against St Albans.

A fight erupted between opposing supporters following a night match, which ended 2-2, a fortnight ago. Players, referees and club officials were not involved when the trouble occurred 10 minutes after the game finished. About 12 police attended and no charges were laid.

Both clubs fronted the tribunal at Dallas Brooks Hall last week and were charged and convicted under the new FFV grievance disciplinary and tribunal bylaw. St Albans, which was vying for promotion back into Premier League, is also appealing the decision.

Teams have played half of the season's 22 games. The referees' initial report states: "Frankston Pines were very good with our security and they made sure all precautions were taken to ensure our safety."

In 2004 there was a similar incident at Monterey Reserve when the same teams met and it was widely reported in the daily media.

A spokesman for Pines said the club was disappointed with the decision but would not comment pending the appeal.

"We are obviously disappointed that our senior and under-21s are sidelined through no fault of their own, but we will await the decision of the appeal before making any comments," he said.
