HASTINGS police will increase patrols in Western Port commercial centres as the spate of vandalism and criminal damage continues, this time with cruising vandals shooting shopfront windows in Hastings.
A Hastings accountancy firm is the latest target of vandals who have broken more than a dozen windows in commercial and residential properties in the town centre in the past fortnight.
Treweek and Company accountants in Salmon Street was hit twice last week - on Tuesday and on the weekend - leaving the office with three broken windows.
Proprietor Phil Treweek said a small projectile had been fired through the laminated glass windows, leaving a hole that looked like a bullet hole.
The damage was consistent with a high-powered slingshot firing ball bearings or an air rifle.
Leading Senior Constable Col Barber said there was no pattern to the damage and the offenders had made no attempt to steal goods from any premises.
"It appears they are driving past shops and firing projectiles from a high-powered device," he said.
With large shop windows costing about $2000 to repair, the damage bill throughout Hastings has climbed into the tens of thousands.
The Hastings-Western Port Historical Society museum in Marine Parade has had three windows broken in recent weeks.
Vice-president Shirley Davies said a metal ball bearing the size of a large pea was found after one attack.
"It's very disappointing. We used to have a break in once in a blue moon and now we have had three attacks in a few weeks," she said.
