Walking to the beat of an unusual drum

09 Feb, 2010 09:44 AM

FRANKSTON resident Sue Curtis has always walked to the beat of her own drum. But the Native American hoop drum teacher is more than willing to introduce others to this unusual instrument.

Ms Curtis is about to start classes at Cranbourne's Balla Balla Centre.

"The drums are easy to play," she said.

"There are many different benefits. The main ones are joy and freedom. The vibrations resonate in the body, which can have a healing effect, which in turn can bring a sense of wellbeing."

Ms Curtis said this inclusive form of music crossed all ages and levels of ability.

"Everyone joins in, so if someone is feeling isolated it brings a sense of community and connection."

Ms Curtis, who studied Native American medicine in America, is training in midwifery at Frankston Hospital.

She still travels widely to many suburbs to run classes.

To book for workshops at the Balla Balla Centre this month and March call the centre on 59900900.

To contact Sue Curtis about holding classes in other suburbs, email suecurtis00@hotmail.com
