Cricket fever's catching on quick

27 Oct, 2009 03:00 AM
PINES Cricket Club's sixth annual schools cricket day had pupils from Mahogany Rise, Aldercourt, Belvedere and Kananook primary schools taking part in a round-robin tournament.

This year, with the help of a $2000 State Government

grant, all the schools taking part were given new cricket gear including bats, pads and helmets.

Each school also received three beach cricket sets that can be used for games at lunchtime.

The cricket club's Darren Walker says the event was not so much about promoting the game but more about giving the youngsters a game of cricket.

He said the club also donated $500 towards replacing the cricket nets at Mahogany Rise Primary School and installing concrete at the bowling crease.
